Indeks di bursa Wall Street ditutup menguat selama dua hari berturut-turut dipicu oleh optimisme akan tercapainya kesepakatan antara Presiden Biden dengan Kongres AS dalam menaikkan batas atas utang AS sebelum batas waktu 1 Juni 2023 sehingga AS terhindar dari gagal bayar. Membatasi penguatan indeks adalah pernyataan dari pejabat The Fed bahwa kebijakan moneter The Fed pada bulan Juni akan tergantung pada data inflasi dan tenaga kerja yang belum dirilis. Hal ini menimbulkan kekhawatiran akan potensi kenaikan suku bunga pada Juni. Data initial claims pekan lalu yang lebih rendah dari perkiraan mendorong penguatan dollar AS sehingga sempat membuat koreksi pada harga minyak mentah dan emas sebelum akhirnya menguat tipis pagi ini.

IHSG pada perdagangan Rabu 16 Mei 2023 ditutup melemah 0,20% pada level 6663. Saham sektor energi mengalami koreksi terbesar, sedangkan saham sektor infrastruktur membukukan kenaikan terbesar. Investor asing mencatatkan net buy Rp187,03 miliar termasuk transaksi di pasar non reguler.
